DyDAn Graduate Fellowship Program - 2009

The Center for Dynamic Data Analysis (DyDAn) is offering fellowships to pursue graduate studies at Rutgers. The fellowships are offered in collaboration with National Center for Secure and Resilient Maritime Commerce (NCSRMC) and the National Transportation Security Center of Excellence (NTSCE), two additional DHS Centers active at Rutgers. The fellowships are funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, offering graduate students generous support for up to three years in order to pursue research interests related to homeland security.

Fields that are of particular relevance to DyDAn, NCSRMC and NTSCE include computer science, mathematics, operations research, industrial engineering and statistics, but we welcome applicants from other areas of science and engineering that have relevance to homeland security.

Graduate fellows are invited to participate in the full range of activities at the three centers, offering exposure to a broad spectrum of interdisciplinary research and education programs. Specific applications of ongoing research include: intelligence analysis, biosurveillance, port-of-entry inspection, evacuation planning, maritime vessel tracking, nuclear threat detection, and privacy-preserving methods for data analysis.

Recipients of DyDAn graduate fellowships are offered the following benefits for up to three years:

  • Full tuition at Rutgers University;
  • $27,600 annual stipend;
  • Rutgers University health benefits;
  • Travel allowance;
  • One-on-one mentoring from faculty at DyDAn, and NCSRMC or NTSCE, as appropriate.

Applicants must:

  • Be a Rutgers graduate student in a science/math/engineering discipline at the start of their fellowship, which may begin in either January 2009 or September 2009;
  • Be a U.S. citizen;
  • Have and maintain a GPA of 3.3 or higher;
  • Agree to do at least one (or more if they choose) summer internship at a National Laboratory, a DHS University Center, or other homeland security venue during the time of their fellowship;
  • Commit to work at a homeland security venue (such as DHS or a National Laboratory) for the year immediately following degree completion. DyDAn will help students identify suitable positions, which may (subject to availability) include postdoctoral fellowships at national laboratories or with DHS university centers. The DyDAn fellowship program is advised by members of several national laboratories which host vibrant postdoctoral programs encouraging scholarly research and publication.

We plan for one fellowship to begin in January 2009 and continue through August 2011 and two fellowships to begin in September 2009 and continue through August 2012, assuming satisfactory progress in all cases.

Fellowships beginning in September are open both to current Rutgers graduate students and to students at other institutions applying to attend Rutgers beginning in September 2009. Students who are not currently in a Rutgers Graduate program should apply for the fellowship and for admission to a graduate program separately. The fellowship beginning in January is open to current Rutgers graduate students only.

Fellowship application due dates:
Applications for fellowships to begin in January 2009 are due by 12/5/08
Applications for fellowships to begin in September 2009 are due by 2/10/09 for full consideration.
